WHITTON BENEFICE TO LOSE TWO MINISTERS
Whitton Benefice parisioners were shocked to hear of the resignation of their husband and wife team of two minsters at the start of the combined service in Chilton Foliat on Sunday.
The Reverend John Railton announced that he and his wife, Rural Dean Sandy would retire before Christmas.
Sandy has been sticken with a mystery illness and has been sick for about a year.
John announced several years ago that he would be retiring in 2009.
He said termination of their term as ministers had been hastened by Sandy’s illness and lack of support from church authorities.
The husband and wife team are known to have been under intense service pressure in the benefice as the Church of England faces up to changing times and increasing criticism.
Their early retirement is expected to severely restrict religious activities in the benefice unless replacements can be found in the next two months.
Both retiring ministers have done much to hold the local churches together during a critical time.
Particular attention has been given to family services and students at Chilton Foliat School where John is chairman of governors. theweeklyadviser.com 04.09.08

FIRE DESTROYS STORAGE BUILDING
Fire crews from both Hungerford and Newbury tackled a fire in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Triangle Field in Hungerford.
It is reported that two wheelie bins were deliberately set alight, which in-turn spread to the eaves of the storage building, rapidly engulfing the structure.
Complete disaster was averted thanks to the fire crews knowledge of the building, meaning they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the main clubhouse. Despite this the changing facilities and the storage rooms were completely gutted.
Hungerford Mayor Peter Harries praised the fire crews, particularly Paul Whiting, whose prompt action prevented the fire spreading. He added that this is the sixth such incident in the Hungerford area in the past two and a half years, including damage to the Library during its consruction and two playgrounds.
Police are currently investigating the fire. theweeklyadviser.com 01.07.08
